A day at the fortress – Exhibition of Arts Florence

High manual skills, research of the finest detail, elegance and style have always been the main ingredients of the International Exhibition of Crafts, and we MadeinItalyfor.me, as every year, could not miss an event so rich and pleasant. An important event both for the quality of the craftsmanship exhibited and for the number of appearances that it can catalyze, in a city already wonderful like Florence.

Now in its 79th edition, the show is – as always – a point of reference for the Italian and foreign crafts. Staged in spectacular Fortress da Basso, it allows the visitor to wander through the pavilions, in an environment that exudes history and traditions and offers a sense of pleasing protection.

Once inside we were swamped with projects and artifacts in the fascinating “construction site” of the handmade, a universe of ancient knowledge and new experiments, from master craftsmen to young talents able to create wonderful twists and great synergies.

For us it is an opportunity to learn about new and talented artisans throughout Italy as well as offer our services, confront and select the artisans we would like to have on our site.

Different thematic areas to visit, from the one dedicated to the Vintage “Rendez Vous – Vintage in Fortress” – a real show dedicated to the world of vintage, design, accessories, clothing – to the services and the innovative solutions for the house, thanks to the area HOUSE IN & OUT, an initiative dedicated to the world of today’s living, technologies, materials, structural furnitures, environmentally sustainable building and energy saving.

The artistic craft in the collections and in the stands has been also an exciting journey in the high craftsmanship Made in Italy. We have been impressed from the very beginning by the collection of Barbaro Messina, Sensazioni (Sensations), not only worthy of the best art galleries, but able to tell a story and evoke emotions with a material as special as the volcanic lava. Etna generates the stone shaped by the visionary hands of the Master, which give a new life to the stone, wearing it with culture, with respect, affection and gratitude of father and son. The works of Barbaro then become the best witnesses of what the land of Etna really is, true ambassadors of a territory that has been declared world heritage and that has always been the cradle of civilization.

Simpler but equally exciting are the wooden toys, in the “Ghiaie” Pavillion “Florence plays on display“. Here were exposed beautiful models of various types of classic toys for children, all in wood and all very funny. You could even try them and challenge your friends, so we enjoyed our little playful moment…

Unfortunately one day is not enough to see the whole show, and so, after the break and a great Tyrolean dining appreciated from all the team, we went quickly from stand to stand, among the various floors of the exhibition halls, admiring and touching first-hand the mastery of many other Italian artisans.

In the striking exhibition spaces of the Fortress da Basso the timeless appeal of Italian craftmanship met an infinite number of artifacts from distant countries, confirming the role of Florence as a unifying and driving force of cultures and ethnic groups.

And it was Tibet, geographic and international myth in the western unconscious, the guest of honor in this edition, where it brought its handcrafted creations (from Thangka to Phurba) as well as engaging public with calligraphy demonstrations, traditional dances and the Mandala ceremony.
