Description

Around the fifteenth century, the inhabitants of the Marche region and the pilgrims who arrived in these areas had the custom of tattooing their hands or forearms, at wrist level with these symbols, an emblem of faith and love for the pilgrims of Loreto. These were tattoos of blue color: figures, mottos, crosses, sacred symbols, pierced hearts, skulls and anchors.

The origins of this custom can be traced back to the areas surrounding the Holy House of Loreto, a place where, even today, the boxwood tiles called "Markers" are preserved and exposed to the public, which had the double function of catalog of the available designs that they could be tattooed and stamped for the reproduction of preliminary drawings for tattooing.

After many centuries of practice, the Loretano tattoo tradition was forbidden but in part continued clandestinely, so that, until a few decades ago, people with indigo-colored tattoos on their wrists or forearms could have been met in the Marche countryside and beyond. Today those symbols have been reproduced on the jewels and accessories of the Mutatuo line which collects a selection of the original symbols of the Loreto tradition.
