Mocha Split – The new Meraky collection eco-banana leather

BOLOGNA | Emilia Paolicelli and Rosaria Marraffino creators, designers and artisans of Meraky design, after the beautiful bags made starting from coffee packs, launch a new collection of handcrafted and eco-sustainable women’s bags: Mocha Split.

The inspiration, this time, starts from the famous American dessert Banana Split, mixed with coffee and transformed into Mocha Split, a name also thought to recall the materials conceived, conceived and used in this new project: PACOBA.TEX and the characteristic packaging of intertwined coffee.

The vegan material

Through a collaboration with Monica di Casa Grigi, Emilia and Rosaria have developed PACOBA.TEX: an innovative material, cruelty-free, 100% vegan and made up of 80% banana peels. A specially designed compound that also contains paper fibers, cotton and a secret ingredient that Meraky ensure that it is also 100% natural.

The choice of bananas suggested by Casa Grigi is very advantageous because they ripen quickly and often, when they turn brown and nobody wants to buy them, they can be recovered without ending up in the trash. And it is precisely from this possibility that Casa Grigi has started a partnership with a Portuguese supermarket chain, helping them to recover part of those destined for the landfill.

The production process

The totally artisanal production process lasts several days. Bananas are boiled until they release potassium and sugar. They are then combined with the paper and cotton fibers through several steps. The mixture must then rest to be subsequently spread out to dry until it is ready for use.

But we ask Meray directly why he chose this material

“In our first collection, AROMA, we used animal leather to complement our accessories. However, the use of leather has always worried us. We are sensitive to animal abuse and the environmental impact of the tanning industry. Leather must be many toxic chemicals are used in the process. These substances can end up in the soil and water, and can also harm people working in the tanning industry. Faux leather is not an option, because it is even more polluting than animal skin.

The search for an alternative to leather has led us to explore new opportunities for collaboration. And that’s how we met Monica and her start-up, Casa Grigi, in Portugal. Monica has been developing new materials for 10 years, has 5 registered patents and has won several awards, such as A Design Awards in 2016. Right from the start, we knew what the goal of this collaboration would be: to develop a natural material that could replace leather in the our creations “.
